The Moving Check List
Months Before The Move

Obtain and complete Change of Address form available at any post office.
Find a moving company and make your reservation.
Make travel arrangements, if necessary, with airlines, buses, car rental agencies and hotels.
Consider and make plans for your children and pets during the move.
Obtain medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories. Ask doctor and dentist to transfer prescriptions.
Transfer memberships in clubs and organizations.
Find out if your bank can serve you in your new location. If not, find new arrangements.
Check into the laws and requirements of your new city regarding home-based businesses.
Start using up food items, so that there is less left to pack and possibly spoil.

Weeks Before The Move
Reserve elevator.
Consider and contract help for the moving day.
Switch utility services to new address.
• electric • water • waste removal • cable
• newspaper • magazines • phone
Have appliances serviced before moving.
Clean rugs and clothing and have them wrapped for moving.
Finish your banking if you have chosen to transfer.
Change safe-deposit box.
Check your insurances.
Notify someone of your contact situation during the move.

Days Before Moving
Defrost freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer inside to control odors.
Double check closets, drawers, shelves, attic and garage to be sure they are empty.
Get travelers checks rather than cash for the move.
Return propane tanks.
Make arrangements for the moving truck to park as close as possible to your door.

The Moving Day
Don’t plan to do too much.
Keep medications with you.
Carry important documents, currency and jewelry yourself or use registered mail.
